Governors

Have you ever thought about becoming a school governor?
We have a vacancy for a parent governor at Swinnow Primary School. Any parent of a registered child is eligible to nominate themselves. If more than one person nominates themselves, then we will have an election.
What do governors do?
Essentially, they provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. They help set the school’s priorities, aims and objectives; monitor and evaluate progress towards achieving aims and provide effective support and challenge to the school leadership team.
What does this look like in practice?
At Swinnow, we expect our governors to be proactive. Typically, in a year, governors would attend:
- Four full governing body meetings
- Three sub-committee meetings
- Some governors might have additional meetings with a member of staff in school if they have an additional responsibility.
Meetings are usually between 4:30pm and 6:30pm – some are a little longer; some shorter. At the moment, these meetings are held remotely, via zoom.
Outside of meetings, governors read information provided by the school and write short reports about their additional meetings – if they have any.
What training and support is available?
All governors can access training to enable them to develop the knowledge and skills they need to fulfil their role. Induction training is provided to all new governors. Those with a specific area of responsibility can also access more targeted training.
Leeds Governor Support Service provides a huge array of resources and documents to help.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please speak to Mrs Naylor
If you are interested in this role, please download a nomination form from the school website (click here for ‘Our School’ then ‘Governors’) or collect a hard copy from the school office. These should be completed and returned to us by Wednesday 4th November – you can send a paper copy into school or email to info@swinnowprimary.com. If we receive more than one nomination, then an election will be held.
