Applying for secondary school (year 7) places for September 2023
Please read the information below from Leeds City Council Admissions for information.
Applications for year 7 places for September 2023 - Children born between 1 September 2011 and 31 August 2012 are due to start year 7 in September 2023. You must apply to your home local authority (whoever empties your bins) even if you wish to apply for Leeds schools. You can make an online application on our online portal from 1 August 2022. You should apply by 31 October 2022 as this is the national deadline.
If your child is taught out of chronological age group or currently lives abroad, you won’t be able to apply using the online portal. Please ask us for a paper application form by emailing this email address.
Applications or changes made after the national deadline (31 October)
Not all schools allow changes to be made after the national deadline. If you submit or change your application after the deadline it could be treated with a lower priority than applications submitted on time - this reduces your chances of being offered a preference school. If you submit or change your application:
- by 28 November 2022, most Leeds schools will treat the application as on time - check if this date applies by reading each school's admissions policy
- by 31 December 2022, your application will receive a lower priority than those submitted on time - unless we agree you had exceptional reasons for missing this date.
- on or after 1 January 2023, you will not receive a school offer until April, after all other school places have been given out.
If you have exceptional reasons why you could not submit your application on time, tell us by emailing us at this address. Not receiving a reminder to apply is not an exceptional reason.
Moving house: You should apply by the deadline using your current address. As soon as you move, you should send us evidence of your house move (and any new school preferences), we need this no later than one month after you've moved. If you submit evidence after 31 December 2022 we will not be able to take it into account until after offer day.
You need to tell us immediately if there are changes in your circumstances that affect your application after you submit it and before your child starts at the school. Let us know if:
- you have moved home – tell as soon as possible but no later than a month after you've moved
- your child's sibling has left or joined a school you've applied to
- your child has left a feeder school
If you do not tell us about changes, we may withdraw your school offer. If you're unsure if a change affects your application, please contact us.
National Offer Day - All local authorities send offers for year 7 places on 1 March 2023. If you applied through our online application portal, we'll email you with your child's offer. We’ll send this email during the working day. If you applied in any other way, you'll receive an offer letter to your registered home address (a few days after offer day).
To ensure we deal with your email as quickly as possible, please make sure you are contacting the correct team:
· For reception and junior applications for September 2023, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
· For in year applications (to move to a Leeds School), please email email@example.com
· For school appeals, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
All families are asked to read the ‘Before you apply’ section on Leeds City Councils new website
