History

In History at Swinnow, we aim to spark children’s curiosity about the past. We aim to inspire them to develop an interest in and appreciation of human achievements and aspirations.

Children will come to know that history is about real people who lived, and real events that happened in the past. They will learn about significant events in the history of our own country and of the world, and how these events may have influenced one another. They will learn about ancient civilisations and how these affected the world we live in today. Children will develop an awareness of people of other countries and will gain an understanding, tolerance and respect for traditions and culture both now and in the past.

Children will develop a secure knowledge of chronology within which they can organise their understanding of the past. They will understand how the past was different from the present and that people of other times and places may have had different values and attitudes from ours.

We want children to be interested to know more about their own past and to have the skills required to explore their own interests. It is important for children to develop a sense of identity through learning about the past and we want them to know how history has shaped their own lives and our local area.

We aim to enable children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Children will explore methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence and artefacts are used to make historical claims. They will ask perceptive questions, think critically and weigh evidence. They will understand how to distinguish between historical facts and the interpretation of those facts.
